Ft. Sumner Fall Campaign Kickoff!09.27.2013

Ft Sumner Balloon

NASA's Balloon Program Office based at Wallops Flight Facility kicked off the Fall Fort Sumner balloon campaign at Fort Sumner, New Mexico in early August. The flight manifest includes six large balloon missions in addition to one hand balloon launch.

To date, three of the six large balloon missions have been flown. The Long Duration Balloon (LDB) test flight was successfully flown on August 19, the High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) was successfully flown on September 2, and the High Energy Replicated Optics to Explore the Sun (HEROES) mission was successfully flown on September 21. The HEROES mission had a flight duration of over 26 hours.

The remaining missions to be flown include the Balloon Rapid Response for ISON (BRRISON) mission, the Wallops Arc Second Pointer (WASP) with the HyperSpectral Imager for Climate Science (HySICS) piggyback payload, and the X-Caliber Hard X-Ray Polarimeter.
