The 2007-2008 Antarctica Campaign 01.31.2008

NASA achieved a new milestone in scientific observations using balloons by launching and operating 3 long-duration flights within a single Antarctic Summer.

Dr. Eun-Suk Seo, University of Maryland. The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM) instrument will investigate ultra high energy cosmic rays over the elemental range from protons to iron. The goal is to observe spectral features and/or abundance changes that might be related to a supernova acceleration limit. This is the third flight for the instrument.

CREAM launched on 12/19/07 and has a total flight time of 28 days, 21 hours, 53 minutes

Dr. John Mitchell, GSFC. The Balloon Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) instrument will perform precise measurements of cosmic rays by using a superconducting spectrometer in the solar minimum period of 2007.

BESS launched on 12/22/07 and had a total flight time of 30 days, 15 hours, 37 minutes.

Dr. John Wefel, Louisiana State University. Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) measurements will uncover elemental (Hydrogen to Iron) spectra and the electron spectrum in an energy region not previously well investigated. The resulting high-energy spectra have implications for cosmic-ray sources, acceleration mechanisms and propagation in the galaxy.

ATIC was launched on 12/26/07 and had a total flight time of 19 days, 10 hours, 43 minutes.

The 2007-2008 Antarctica Campaign was both an operational and science success. In each of the three science flights, the science preflight desired minimums were exceeded.
